Sligo PPN March 2019 Newsletter

Welcome to a special St Patrick's Day edition of the PPN Newsletter

As well as letting you know about key events celebrating our national holiday, we will also take the chance to tell you about a few other things happening around Sligo.

St Patrick's Day Activities
Look out for Sligo Tidy Towns group in the parade. Normally it would be hard to miss a truck full of Leprechauns but this year bearded little green dancing (wo)men will be the norm!

Dromore West Village Enhancement Committee are delighted to announce our annual

St. Patrick's Day Parade 2019
Sunday, 17th March commencing at 4.15pm
(parade entrants are asked to gather from 3.30 pm from Dromore West Church).

And if you are not partaking in the parade, we hope to see you on the streets celebrating with us! There will be refreshments and entertainment in the Dromore West Community Centre immediately after the parade.

This year our Parade Theme is “Going Green”. We are asking all parade entrants and the businesses to come up with Eco-friendly and sustainable ideas for this year’s parade. We are also asking all businesses to help promote St. Patrick’s Day by helping to decorate their shop fronts and businesses in a sustainable way. We will be awarding prizes for the best “Going Green” idea for parade entrants and also the best decorated business.

In conjunction with the Tidy Towns, we will once again be supporting an Environmentally Friendly parade, which means we will be displaying Irish flags across the village, and other environmentally friendly paraphernalia where possible, rather than plastic bunting.

Please check out our Facebook page for further details or contact Dromore West Community Centre Office at 0858697275 or Email communitycentre@dromorewest.ie

COUNTY SLIGO GREAT WAR MEMORIAL

Fundraising for the Great War Memorial Garden at Cleveragh Regional Park is now underway and donations can be made through the Lest Sligo Forgets recently launched website: https://lestsligoforgets.org .  The Memorial Garden will be a permanent memorial to all 605 Sligo men and five civilians who died as a result of the conflict, the name of each engraved on an upright granite panel and grouped according to their town-land of origin. Set within a landscaped setting, the garden will be a peaceful and meditative place for remembering and reflecting upon the loss of so many lives.  The memorial will be publicly accessible 24-hours a day.

The memorial garden site has been provided by Sligo County Council, a project partner, and is being part-funded by PEACE IV, however additional fundraising is required to complete the project.  Lest Sligo Forgets is providing an opportunity for members of the public to support the County Sligo Great War Memorial Garden by becoming a Name Benefactor and make a contribution directly associated with someone from County Sligo lost the Great War.  This could be someone known to the donor such as an ancestral family member or someone chosen for you.  Our target is for each of 610 individuals from County Sligo to have an individual memorial benefactor remembering them through their contribution towards the realisation of the Memorial Garden.  Donations by Name Benefactors will be clearly acknowledged on our website’s Benefactors page and donors will receive an invitation to attend the unveiling of the Memorial Garden as a sponsor of the name you have supported.

Please help us make the County Sligo Great War Memorial Garden a reality in 2019, more than a century after the end of the war, by sponsoring the name of one of those who died: https://lestsligoforgets.org/name-sponsor/adopt-a-name

Training and Information
COPD Coping with Lung Disease Seminar
Sligo Southern Hotel

April 1st,  11am - 4pm

Do you or someone you know suffer shortness of breath on small exertion?
You could be one of many in the region suffering from COPD.

Benbulben COPD Support Group, in association with Sligo Lend a Hand and friends of Timmy Newell, are hosting an information seminar to raise awareness of Lung disease COPD, one of the most common respiratory diseases in Ireland. Around 110,000 people have been diagnosed with the disease and as many more living with the disease who have not yet been diagnosed. COPD is a disease which makes it hard to empty air out of your lungs resulting in shortness of breath. COPD can be caused by exposure to dust smoke or fumes or be an inherited condition called ALPHA-1 ANTITRYPSIN deficiency, which is quite rare. Dr Tomas Carroll Chief Scientist at Alpha  1 Foundation will present on the day.

There is no cure for COPD but there are many ways by which symptoms can be treated and managed. Knowledge is key to improving the quality of your life once diagnosed. Know your medicines. Can exercise help? Need help to stop smoking? Do you panic if you have a flare up? All of these questions and many more will be addressed.    Professor Tim McDonnell specialist in Respiratory medicine at St Vincent's Hospital and HSE Clinical lead will deliver the keynote address.
The seminar will be of interest to members of the public, diagnosed persons, family members of sufferers, carers and healthcare professionals.

The event is free to attend while a contribution toward lunch would be welcomed.
