Primary and secondary schools in Sligo have been working with Power to Change to create learning resources that encourage climate people to engage in climate converstations. One of these is Reimagining Sligo, a board game that uses local issues and characters to spark conversation, teamwork and new ideas.
In the game, players take on the roles of a builder, a scientist, a politician and a farmer, each with four issues to solve. Over five rounds, you receive a budget, make decisions and try to tackle challenges before time runs out. At the end of each round, any problems left unresolved lead to consequence cards. A roll of the dice then decides whether you escape the impact or face the cost. Problem-solving, teamwork and chance bring in elements of strategy, teamwork, and chance to help players see the real-life risks and rewards of climate action.
This video brings together an overview of the game and reflections from those who’ve already tried it.
It was really interesting seeing the issues that we face around Sligo environmentally being brought up in a board game format and it was cool workding together with my peers to solve those problems. I played the politician. You're solving problems like getting offshore wind farms installed at the Atlantic Ocean. It's been a really enjoyable experience.
