Sligo Bay Catchment River Trust Water Heritage Day Event

August 25, 2025

On Sunday last, Sligo Bay Catchment River Trust, as part of the National Heritage Week, held a very successful and special event aboard ‘’The Rose of Innisfree’ Tour Boat on Lough Gill.

Mr Donal Gilroy, Chair of Sligo County Council and Sligo County Council Heritage Forum, attended. In his address Mr Gilroy congratulated the Trust for this very informative and interesting approach to Heritage, with two excellent speakers in Michael Bell of Nature Learn and Martin Enright, expert on History and Archaeology of the area. Martin and Michael shared their extensive knowledge of the Biodiversity and Heritage of Lough Gill, including some detailed stories of those who lived around the lough and on its many islands.

The level of interest in these is such, that the boat reached full capacity within days of being advertised. We are sure that everyone on board will have learned something new about Lough Gill, as Martin and Michael’s commentaries gelled so well together.
Pat Benson Chair of Sligo Bay Catchment River Trust, which covers all water bodies in County Sligo, thanked them both very much for giving of their time, especially on a Sunday afternoon, to make this such an outstanding event. He also expressed the Trust’s appreciation to Mr Gilroy as Chair of Sligo County Councill for attending the event and for his address during a very busy schedule this week.

The Trust thanks all the elected councillors for their ongoing support to the Trust and indicated that the Trust, which is now a legal entity, is available to assist all statutory bodies in their efforts to keep our water quality standards high in County Sligo.
Pat expressed the Trust’s thanks to Local Authority Water Programme for funding the event, Sheena Spencer, Secretary for her organising and Alan McGoldrick Captain of The Rose of Innisfree and his team for their flexibility and assistance ensuring everyone had a safe and pleasant journey.
