The purpose of the Thomas Howley commemoration committee is to name the bridge over the Bellawady River, at Lower Main Street, Enniscrone after Volunteer Thomas Howley. We are currently applying to the council in regard to this matter. We comprise of 21 members spaning a broad range of the commuinity. Thomas Howley gave his life for the cause of Irish Independence at the age of 18. He was shot by crown forces in Bunree on the 25th of May 1921, whilst on route to Athlone military hospital on the 28th of May, Howley died of his wounds. Therefore, it is fitting that the people of Enniscrone have decided to establish a committee to honour the dedication Thomas Howley gave to the cause of Irish freedom.
